Fox Conductor

Fox Conductor

What does this fox say?  "All aboard!"  This soft sculptured fox conductor is made by starting out with a wire frame.  Using repurposed wool, layers are created using a needle and thread to "sculpt" the figure to the desired shape.  Then, the "fur" is sewn on from a repurposed jacket, and details are added using a technique called "thread painting."  Embroidered and string jointed, the fox is completely made by hand; no machine is used.  This fox took approximately 35 to 40 hours to create.  This keepsake can be handed down the line like a train down the tracks and bring delight to young and old.

Michele Bango began creating clothes for her Kewpie dolls starting at about 9 years old with her Grandma on a treadle sewing machine. Although she learned on a machine, many of her works that she creates today are all stitched by hand. The techniques and designs that she uses are her own in which she creates works of art starting with a blank piece of fabric. She has been a "Teddy Bear Artist" for almost 35 years, creating artisan teddy bears, animal art dolls and birds out of both new and repurposed materials.
